ROB3 Project, the biggest project of the first year of the engineering cycle at Polytech Sorbonne (year 3 of 5), carried out by a team of 6: Diyana, Émile, Rayan, Matthieu, Pierre-Louis, Esteban.
Goal: design an autonomous mobile robot capable of navigating an arena, detecting an object (totem) at an unknown position, grasping it precisely and dropping it at a defined location, with no human interaction.
The robot consists of a unicycle cart, a 1-DOF parallelogram vertical arm and a gripper mounted at the front.
My role: Mechanical (lead) + Software
On the mechanical side, I designed and manufactured all robot parts:
- Parallelogram arm: 2 aligned links fixed to the chassis via supports and wedges. Front link screwed to the motor, rear one held between two clamping supports. I solved the collision issue by using an arc-shaped part to hold the gripper.
- Chassis: modeled in SolidWorks, laser-cut (6 mm wood), with rectangular cutouts to slot the supports in with wedges — rigid but removable assembly.
- All parts: link, arc part, motor support, link support, wedges — modeled in SolidWorks and laser-cut.
- Return spring: added to help the motor lift the arm (insufficient torque alone).
On the software side: proportional controller for the arm, beacon detection, 90° rotation, scanning to detect the totem, grasp and release functions.
